Numbers Game

Posted on October 12, 2012

This story is from Dana, a 22-year-old student from Chicago, as told to Raz:

It was our fourth date, and I brought Steve back to my place to seal the deal. The sex was great (if a little too speedy), and I was feeling good. Post hook up, we were lying in bed. For God knows what reason, we started talking about how many people we’d slept with (never a good topic with someone you’ve just slept with for the first time.) I sheepishly told him my number, not too high, not too low, I think.

“Ok what’s yours?” I asked, expecting the worst. After all, he was a smooth-talking, attractive senior athlete.

“No way,” he said. “All I’ll tell you is that it’s an even number.”

“That’s so unfair!” I teased him. “You have to tell me!”

The look on his face was genuinely uncomfortable. “Oh my God,” I thought. “It’s really high.”

“You know what? I don’t wanna know,” I said. “Speaking of even numbers…” Smooth change of subject coming right up. “We just learned in my math class that zero is technically an even number.”

He looked taken aback. “Yeah,” he said.

“What?” I asked

“Oh my God. You’ve slept with zero people?”

I had just unintentionally swiped a 22-year-old man’s V-card, and I hadn’t even known it.

“How?” I asked

“I just hadn’t found the right person yet,” he smiled.

It was only our fourth date! And he was declaring me the right person. Sweet? Yes. Terrifying? Definitely.

Things got awkward after that. Next time, I’ll avoid playing the numbers game at all costs.
